Troubleshooting Septic System Backups

There’s nothing a homeowner dreads more than a septic system backup. Backups are messy, unsanitary, inconvenient, and expensive. Unfortunately, they can happen, which is why you have to be prepared.

If your sewer line backs up, is the issue best resolved by a plumber or a septic team? At Cyclone Septics, we’ve put together a simple guide to help you figure it out.

Skip to #4 if you have a conventional septic system.

1. Is There a Red Light On?
  • If yes, then the issue is most likely with the septic system. Call Cyclone Septics!
  • If no, the issue may be a plugged line in the house or an issue with the septic system. Go to the next question.
    2. Is Your System Turned On?

Use the test switch to check.

    • If yes, the issue may be a plug in the house or an issue with the septic system. Keep going to the next question.
    • If no, then check all your breakers including the main one in the electrical panel, the disconnect outside, and the breakers inside the control panel. If you can’t get it to come on, call Cyclone Septics.

      3. Is Your System Turned On?
      • If only one or some toilets or drains are impacted, then it’s most likely caused by a plug in the house. Call your plumber.
      • If all of your drains and toilets are impacted, then it could be a problem with your septic system. Go to the next question.
      4. Is There Water Standing in Your Cleanout?

To check for standing water, look for a white pipe between your house and the aerobic system. Remove the cover to look inside.

      • If there is standing water, the issue is most likely with your septic system. Keep going to the next question.
      • If there is no standing water, then you probably have a plug in your house. Please call your plumber.

      5. Is the Baffle in the Tank Clear?
      • If yes, your first call should be to a plumber.  The problem is most likely a plugged line in the house or between the house and the tank.
      • If no, then clear the baffle by pushing a stick or pipe through the opening. If that doesn’t resolve your problem, Cyclone Septics is here with emergency support!

An awesome lady named Dawn came out and checked out our septic tank after we've been living in a fully backed-up house since Friday night, unable to use our toilets/showers/etc... It was getting horrible... Our house was able to finally drain all that backed up sewage and now we can finally enjoy our house again and shower! I HIGHLY recommend Cyclone Septics!!!
