Aerobic System Disinfection

Every aerobic system needs disinfection to remove harmful bacteria before the treated water is sprayed onto your lawn. This step is critical to protect your family and your property.

Liquid Chlorination (Standard on All Cyclone Systems)

Most systems we install includes a liquid chlorinator. You’ll find it under a black 4-inch cap near the pump tank.

  • Use regular household bleach (no splashless, scented, or gel types).
  • If you use concentrated bleach, dilute it with water one-to-one.
  • Most systems use about 1–3 gallons per month, depending on household size and water use.

Pro Tip: For the first quarter, check your bleach level monthly so you learn how fast your system uses it. After that, a quarterly check is usually enough.

Important: Never put tablets into a liquid chlorinator. Mixing the wrong chemicals in the wrong system can damage your equipment and create a safety hazard.

If your aerobic system uses liquid bleach, your tank could have 1 of 2 reservoir styles depending on its age.  You should be looking for a black 4″ cap located near or on your pump tank.

Chlorine Tablets

Some systems use chlorine tablets instead of liquid bleach. We do not install tablet chlorinators as standard, but you may see them on older systems or from other providers.

  • Only use septic system tablets made for wastewater (never use pool tablets).
  • Do not add more than four tablets at once.
  • Average use is 1–2 tablets per week.

Important: Never place tablets in a liquid chlorinator. A liquid system is designed for bleach only, and mixing in tablets can be unsafe and damage the unit.

UV Disinfection (Optional Upgrade)

For homeowners who want the cleanest possible option, we also offer UV disinfection as an upgrade. Instead of chemicals, UV light sterilizes treated water before it leaves the system.

Benefits include:

  • No need to buy or add bleach or tablets
  • Safer for pets, kids, and lawns
  • Consistent disinfection with less upkeep

Ask us about adding UV disinfection to your aerobic system if you want the most advanced solution available.
